Not to clear a jam, not to retrieve something, not with the switch off. Tongs or pliers, with the power isolated.
Isolate the power at the breaker. Then use the hex wrench that shipped with the unit — usually in a kitchen drawer — in the socket at the centre of the underside. No wrench? A broom handle down through the sink opening, levered against an impeller, does the same job.
Turn it, and note what you feel.
That's a jam, and it's the most common disposal fault there is.
What to do: work the wrench back and forth until it frees. Then with the power still off, look into the chamber with a torch and remove whatever caused it with tongs. Bones, fruit pits, bottle caps, cutlery, and glass are the usual culprits.

Dry everything under the sink thoroughly, run the disposal briefly with water, and watch where the first drop appears.

This is the most common misdiagnosis on the appliance, and it's worth being straight about.
If the motor turns freely, sounds normal, and the sink still won't drain, the disposal is doing its job. Grinding and draining are two different functions — the appliance is grinding and the path out is restricted.
Fill the other side of a double sink and release it. If that side drains freely and the disposal side doesn't, the restriction is close by — the discharge elbow or the trap. If both sides are slow, it's further downstream and the disposal is entirely innocent.
It emulsifies it and sends it warm into the drain line, where it cools on the pipe wall — and that accumulation is behind most kitchen line blockages.
Replacing the appliance changes nothing. You'd have a new disposal grinding perfectly into the same restricted pipe.
If a disposal was recently installed and the dishwasher has started backing up, check the knockout plug. New units ship with the dishwasher inlet sealed, and it must be removed before the hose is connected — the most common installation error on this appliance, and seconds to establish.
Systems one, two, and three are worth repairing at almost any age. System four isn't, because nothing inside a domestic disposal is built to be rebuilt.
