Put a thermometer in the freezer, leave it a few hours without opening the door, and read it.
Why it matters: an ice maker uses temperature to decide when the ice has frozen enough to harvest. If the freezer is running warm, that cycle either takes far too long or never triggers at all.
What you're looking for: around 0°F. A freezer a few degrees warmer keeps food perfectly frozen while producing little or no ice — which is exactly why nobody suspects it.
Don't use the door displayIt shows what the appliance has been asked to do, or what it believes — which on a unit with a drifting sensor is the fault you're trying to findLook at the cubes themselves, or watch a fill cycle if you can.
What you're looking for: full, well-formed cubes that fill their moulds.
What it tells you: small, hollow, or partially formed cubes mean not enough water is arriving — and that's a supply problem rather than a mechanical one. Thin flat slabs, or ice overflowing the mould, mean too much.

What you're looking for: a steady output — most domestic units produce a batch every couple of hours under normal conditions. The number that matters most is how it compares with what your machine used to do.

That's normal for a domestic ice maker. Cloudiness comes from dissolved air and minerals freezing quickly. Commercial machines make clear ice because they freeze it slowly in layers — a domestic one doesn't work that way, and no repair will change it.

There's water on the floor, or ice building up outside the bin. Leaks get worse, and water inside a freezer cabinet does damage beyond the appliance.
The fill tube keeps freezing, or production is intermittent and unpredictable.

Don't call at all if the shut-off arm was up, the sensor was blocked, the supply valve was closed, the filter was overdue, or the ice is simply cloudy.

If the leak is significant: turn off the water supply valve to the fridge and switch the appliance off at the socket before investigating.

On many refrigerators the ice maker is a self-contained assembly that comes out and goes back in as a unit. This is frequently the practical repair — cheaper than people expect, and far cheaper than the alternative.
Only relevant if the underlying problem is the fridge itself — a sealed system fault, a failed compressor, or a freezer that can't hold temperature on an ageing appliance. In that case the ice maker was a symptom, not the problem.
