What it is: the bake element and grill element on an electric oven; the burner, igniter, and gas valve on a gas one.
How it fails: elements blister, break, or develop a dead section. Gas igniters weaken with age until they can no longer draw enough current to open the gas valve — they still glow, but the oven never lights.
What it looks like: no heat at all, or burnt on top and raw underneath when one of two elements has failed and the other is compensating.

How measurement separates them:
Read at least twenty minutes past preheat, it tells you whether the cavity is actually reaching temperature. If it is, systems one and two are working — and you're looking at distribution or containment.
Front to back, left to right, shelf to shelf. That tells you whether you have a temperature problem or a distribution problem, which sends you to completely different components.
Takes ten seconds and rules out system four.
Rules out the visible half of system one.
Do those three before we arrive and you've narrowed a four-way problem to one or two — and it's an inexpensive thermometer rather than a diagnostic fee.
If any of those explains it, we'll tell you on the phone rather than charge you for a visit.
If you smell gas — after calling the gas utility and 911 — or if there's smoke, sparking, scorching around a control, or a burning electrical smell.
The oven won't heat at all, a gas burner won't light, a gas flame is yellow and sooty, or the door is locked shut after a cleaning cycle.
Cooking is uneven, temperatures seem off, preheating is slow, one function has stopped working, or a light has failed. The appliance still works — and running the thermometer test before we arrive makes it a faster and more accurate visit.
Don't call at all if it was a tripped breaker, foil on the oven floor, a misaligned burner cap, or non-magnetic pans on an induction hob.
If both are clear: the igniter or the spark module.
Usually the spark module, a switch fault, or the gas supply valve.
Frequently moisture or spillage in a switch or igniter — common after cleaning, and often just needs drying out.
Stop using that burner and call. A properly adjusted gas burner burns mostly blue, and a persistently yellow flame indicates incomplete combustion.
That's the flame supervision device doing its job — a thermocouple or flame sensor that holds the gas valve open only while it detects a flame. Routine repair, and never something to bypass.
Usually the element or its switch — a straightforward repair.
Test the pan with a magnet. If it doesn't stick firmly to the base, that pan will never work on induction. Also check the pan is large enough for the zone.
Frequently overheating from restricted ventilation beneath the hob. Tell us the code when you call — it's genuinely diagnostic.
Stop using it, particularly where liquid can reach live components.
Everyone out, don't operate switches or use a phone indoors, and call your gas utility and 911 from outside. We attend once the site is confirmed safe.
